According to research, the southwestern US is the geographic area most suited to use solar power. It’s not just for residential customers, commercial and business users can benefit from a solar system, too.   The federal solar Investment Tax Credit is a 30% tax credit for residential and commercial properties that convert to solar, through the end of 2016, so you’ll need to install your system before then to get this tax credit. It can reduce your business tax liability, as well as reduce operating costs, and also makes your business attractive to people who appreciate the “green” nature of solar power.

Evaluate your business or facility to determine if it’s feasible. You need plenty of sunlight. Tall buildings in the area can block the sun’s rays and keep the panels shaded, reducing efficiency and the amount of power produced.  Do you have the space for a large panel system? If you plan to install it on a roof, is your structure capable of carrying the weight?  Can the panels be oriented to take full advantage of the sunlight? Another choice might be to install in an empty field or unused parking lot that can be secured.

You’ll also need to carefully evaluate the amount of electricity your business uses, to get the proper size system. Commercial solar systems require virtually no maintenance, are very sturdy, and should last at least 15-20 years, more than long enough to recoup your costs.

Even businesses or facilities that are high utility users should consider it.  The excess solar power generated during daytime hours is stored within batteries, and can be used at night.  Alternatively, solar can power your operation during the day, when electric rates are higher, and can convert back to traditional utility electric at night, if necessary.  Even if you don’t plan to use solar for all your energy needs, it can still represent a significant savings on your operating costs. In Albuquerque and Rio Rancho, solar is an attractive choice that can be cost effective and very reliable.
